The “F” stands for “Filial Hybrid.” This just means that it is a hybrid dog that has resulted from two purebred parents.
The “B” in doodles can be daunting to understand at first. It just means “backcrossed” to the parent breed. Although it can mean back to golden retriever, Typically it refers back to the poodle. If curlier, less shedding and more allergy-friendliness is important to you, we suggest that you consider one of the generations backcrossed to a poodle. The following will show examples of backcrossing to poodles.
F1 generation:
This is the first generation and comes from one golden retriever parent and one poodle parent. Although they can be lower shedding than the golden retriever, they will still shed. This generation tends to have straight to wavy coats. Their coats aren’t as high maintenance and can be a great fit for families that don’t have allergy concerns and don’t mind some shedding.
F1b generation:
This generation comes about when the puppy has an F1 parent and a poodle parent. They tend to be low to non-shedding and better for families with allergy concerns. They’re more likely to have curly or wavier coats than the F1 generation.
F1bb:
This generation has one F1b parent and one poodle parent. These also tend to be low to non-shedding.
F2
This generation comes from two F1 parents. Ava’s dad is an F2. Like the F1 generation these also tend to have some shedding.
F2B
Once a doodle gets to this generation, it gets a bit inconsistent. This generation can result from a F1 and F1B or from an F2 parent and a poodle parent. The latter is our Ava’s generation! Her dad is a calm, friendly and incredibly handsome cream colored F2 goldendoodle and her mom is a stunning black and white parti poodle. This generation also tends to be low to non-shedding.
F2BB
This is what Ava’s current litter is referred to as. Ava is an F2B, and the sire of the puppies is an adorable poodle. This generation also tends to be low to non-shedding. You may hear people even referring to this generation as “multigen”.
F3
By the time you get to the F3 generation with backcrosses, most breeders refer to them as multigenerational or “multigen”.
